Integrating Robotics and Artificial Intelligence into Architecture and Construction
How can architecture leverage robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and computational design to effectively respond to urgent challenges surrounding the building industry, such as climate change, labor shortages, equity, and inclusion? This lecture presents interdisciplinary research and case-study projects exploring this critical question. These projects introduce new modes of architectural production that integrate robotics, AI, and computational design to exemplify socially and environmentally responsible strategies for designing, planning, and constructing buildings and structures. Collectively, these investigations offer actionable insights into how digital technologies can enable resource-aware design and labor-conscious construction while simultaneously facilitating novel architectural expressions.

Dr. Arash Adel is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and an Associated Faculty of Computer Science at Princeton University, where he directs the Adel Research Group (ARG). ARG conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of robotics, artificial intelligence, and computational design with the overarching goal of advancing resource-aware and labor-conscious architecture and construction practices. At the core of ARG’s comprehensive research is investigating how these technologies can enhance fabrication precision and efficiency, improve labor dynamics (through human–robot collaboration), facilitate low-carbon design and construction, and enable novel architectural expressions. Ultimately, the research seeks to couple technical innovations with social responsibility, producing not only novel architecture and mass customization opportunities but also contributing to a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient built environment.
Prior to joining Princeton University in 2023, Adel was an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Adel received his Doctorate in Architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and his Master’s in Architecture from Harvard University.
