Assistant Professor Rachel Berney has just completed the article, “Inspired by Van Gogh, How the Sunnylands Center and Gardens Teaches through Retreat and Exhibition“ on the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage, California, for TOPOS International Review of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. Also, in January, her chapter, “Public Space versus Tableau, the Right-to-the-City Paradox in Neoliberal Bogotá, Colombia “ was released in the edited volume, Locating the Right to the Global South, published by Routledge. Both pieces examine how landscapes are used to educate.

Lecturer Vinayak Bharne chaired a half-day symposium titled “Engaging the Asian City: Alternative Approaches to Urban Theory, Pedagogy & Practice” at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.  Bharne also recently lectured on his professional work at Parsons The New School of Design in the “Revisiting Urbanism” lecture series.

Visiting Professor Steven Ehrlich’s, Shatto Recreation Center (1987-1990) is included in the exhibit Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future 1940-1990 at the J. Paul Getty Museum. This “compelling” civic building for L.A. City was a close collaboration of the Architect and Artist, Ed Moses.

Lawrence Scarpa and his firm Brooks + Scarpa have received their 5th National American Institute of Architects Committee on The Environment Top Ten Green Building Award. Other awards in 2013 include Residential Architect Magazine’s RADA Award and The Los Angeles Conservancy’s Presidential Award.  Mr. Scarpa has also been appointed to the United States Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operation Advisory Group.

Professor Schierle is invited to design fabric structures and teach a seminar at Xian University of Architecture and Technology.

David Lawrence Gray Architects,  was just recognized by Trends magazine in their Top 50 worldwide Homes list. The beach house selected is one of over 20 that he has designed in Malibu in the last 30 years.   Built into a space just 30ft wide, the structure is 76ft long and 24ft across . More recently, Gray’s firm has won awards for the restoration of several downtown Los Angeles Historic Core buildings that have been reconfigured into apartments and condos.  He serves on the board of the Los Angeles Streetcar Inc. with the goal of bringing back the streetcar to Broadway in downtown Los Angeles.  Additionally, he was just appointed as a Building and Safety Commissioner for the City of Santa Monica.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Valery Augustin, AIA, was a panelist at a symposium titled “Does Architecture Matter?” at the Getty Center. A series of Valery’s drawings were selected for the d3:Sketch exhibition at The Lincoln Center Center Gallery in New York.
