This Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re celebrating AAPI trailblazers in architecture. For today’s ACSA AAPI Month Spotlight, join us in honoring architect and interior designer, Helen Liu Fong.⁠

Helen Liu Fong was born in 1927 in Chinatown, Los Angeles, to immigrant parents. At the age of 12, Fong knew she wanted to become an architect. She came one step closer to reaching her goal in 1949 when she earned a degree in city planning from UC Berkeley. Following graduation, Fong joined the architecture firm of Eugene Kinn Choy, and two years later, she accepted a position at Armet and Davis.⁠

During her time at Armet and Davis, Fong became an important figure in the Googie movement and was known for her futuristic designs. Fong's most notable work includes Holiday Bowl on Crenshaw Boulevard, Norms Restaurant on La Cienega, and Pann’s Restaurant on La Tijera Boulevard. Today, ⁠

Helen Liu Fong was a pioneer for AAPI women in architecture and her legacy continues to inspire architects today. ⁠
