Tenure Track Position
Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the School of Interior Design in The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2024, subject to final budgetary approval. The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly, research and/or creative activity and service duties, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will involve both the undergraduate and graduate level, supervision of graduate students in our new Master of Interior Design (MID I and MID II) programs, and active participation in curriculum development. The successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative program of scholarly, research and/or creative activity that is externally funded and produces impactful, cutting-edge, high-quality results.
A strength of the program is our immersive approach to design problems. Students are challenged at a very early stage in their interior design education by extensive projects in place-making within both local and global contexts.
Candidates must hold a graduate degree in Interior Design or a closely related field as well as teaching experience within a CIDA-accredited program. The successful candidate will be a strong designer who can teach widely in our program and contribute to the intellectual and curricular development of the school.
In addition, the candidates must submit evidence of the following:
- a record of scholarly, research, or creative activities as demonstrated by professional work, peer-reviewed publications, grants, creative scholarship and/or other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;
- an emerging or mature research agenda in one or more of the following areas: expanded, critical or future design practices, or design at the service of environmental or social justice;
- a record of excellence in design teaching, as evidenced by a teaching portfolio that includes examples of student work;
- a commitment to our values of equity, diversity and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population;
- a record of service that shows potential to contribute positively to the life of the School of Interior Design.

A world-class design school with a strong future vision
Ontario’s most highly recognized and successful interior design program, the School of Interior Design’s Bachelor of Interior Design, helps students understand the technological, aesthetic, ideological, environmental, cultural and social dimensions of the built environment. Accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the program’s graduates are industry leaders dedicated to developing equitable and sustainable spaces. Started in 1948, the school has earned widespread industry respect due to the accomplishments of faculty and alumni. This year, the school has launched a Master of Interior Design, which will extend and deepen its leadership in the sector.
