New Jersey Institute of Technology
Newark Design Collaborative Fellowship
Hillier College of Arch & Design
The J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications for two full-time visiting appointments as Fellows of the Newark Design Collaborative (NDC). We seek emerging practitioners/scholars/creatives whose work in architecture or design intersects with urbanism, engages with community, and reckons with complex socio-economic and cultural realities, and who themselves embody Newark’s diversity. Candidates should hold a graduate degree in architecture, design, or a related field, at the Master’s or Doctoral level (ABD is OK).
The NDC is HCAD’s ongoing initiative to engage with our home city to make Newark a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous place. We do this by leveraging the expertise of our faculty in design studios, research seminars, and independent projects in collaborations with city agencies and community stakeholders, producing outcomes such as reports, exhibitions, design proposals, artworks, short films, realized projects, short-term installations, or prototypes. The NDC studies Newark\’s past and present to contribute to its future, engaging community perspectives and educating future designers to address the challenges facing dense urban areas in the 21st century. The NDC also serves as a clearinghouse and resource for all Newarkers through the Digital Archive of Newark Architecture in HCAD\’s Littman Library.
HCAD is one of the largest architecture and design schools in the United States situated in a research-intensive public polytechnic university. Our home city is Newark within the NYC/NJ metro area. We offer graduate and undergraduate degrees in digital, interior, and industrial design, as well as architecture and urban systems and our college provides exciting opportunities for teaching, scholarship, research, and service. HCAD is one of six colleges at the university, attracting diverse faculty and students and encouraging collaboration across disciplines.
– NDC Fellows will teach one studio or two seminars connected to their research projects each semester they are in residence and may choose to continue their work by teaching in HCAD\’s summer sessions.
– They will have the opportunity to present their work publicly to the college and the Newark community at events throughout the year, including lectures, roundtables, and/or exhibitions.
– NDC Fellows will also receive professional or academic mentoring appropriate to their discipline.
– Must have Masters but Phd is option.
– At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Candidates should submit a CV, a cover letter outlining their qualifications and making explicit their interest in the Newark Design Collaborative, and a statement that connects their research and teaching experience with potential projects to be undertaken in/with Newark. Candidates must include a list of three references. Candidates should also include a link in the cover letter to a digital dossier containing samples of their research and design projects in PDF format.
Applicants are encouraged to apply by March 1, 2024. The positions will remain open until filled.
