Under a renewed school strategy and a new Head of School, Professor Daniel A. Barber, the School is exploring how the societal role of architecture is changing, and how our three disciplines can best engage contemporary pressures and complications. This strategy revolves around three pillars: (1) decarbonisation and biodiversity loss, (2) designing with Country and Indigenous knowledge, and (3) Urban equity and housing affordability. We are focused on teaching and research that keep this horizon sharply in view; we are also focused on a workplace and pedagogical environment where our processes and practices reflect this ethical framework.
About the role
The School is currently recruiting for two positions as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Architecture. This is an exciting opportunity for two individuals with a strong research track record and/or a design practice background, and who is focused on shaping the future of practice.
We intend with this recruitment to expand and focus our capacity relative to the three streams noted above, and the successful candidate will clearly demonstrate how their research and teaching are aligned with these trajectories. We are open to a range of specialisms and interests in these contexts, across technology, practice, history and theory, and other forms of architectural knowledge. Perhaps foremost, we are interested in a strong critical voice – a leader or potential leader in the field, in teaching, research and/or practice, able to support colleagues and help students as we navigate the complexities of the changing world around us. The incumbent should anticipate teaching design studio as well as specialty subjects in their area of expertise, as well as producing research appropriate to the level of appointment.
Requirements of each role includes:
- Responsibility for the development, delivery and co-ordination of high-quality teaching in subjects at undergraduate and post graduate level, likely both studio and required lecture courses, often in collaboration with colleagues;
- Representing the discipline to the wider community by fostering, promoting and developing links with industry, government and professional bodies;
- Engaging in research and publications at a rate appropriate to the level of employment;
- Obtaining competitive research grants and participating in team-based research programs.
About you:
- PhD (or equivalent) in Architecture or equivalent fields;
- Ability to develop and teach high quality curricula at under-graduate and post-graduate level;
- Demonstrated academic research production;
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and collegiate environment, and to develop links both within the University and with outside stakeholders;
- Active role in the global discourse on construction and climate justice, and interest in amplifying that discussion in Sydney and globally.
Knowledge in the following areas is also required:
- Expertise in the theory and practice of architecture technology with specific knowledge in an area of expertise that relates to decarbonisation, decolonisation, and/or equity;
- Expertise in the theory and practice of architectural design, in particular for how design approaches and methods relate to the areas mentioned above;
- Practical and theoretical understanding of the ethics of architectural design in emerging environmental, technological, political, and economic settings;
- Understanding the theory and practice of circular economies, reuse economies and practices, retrofit techniques, or related practices preferred;
- Understanding of design-led and traditional research methodologies;
- Understanding of architectural design theory and practice in an interdisciplinary and collaborative context; and
- Sensitivity to issues of diversity in the academy and in the communities we serve, in particular relative to gender and equity and the rights of First Nations.

Remuneration & Benefits
Base Salary Range: $114,836 to $135,915 pa (Level B) – Lecturer
Base Salary Range: $139,598 to $160,317 pa (Level C) – Senior Lecturer
The roles attract 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.
The positions are full time and will be made on a continuing basis.
