Assistant Professor of Urban Design in Sustainable Communities and Infrastructure
The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design at The University of Houston seeks candidates for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor focusing on the areas of Urban Design in Sustainable Communities and Infrastructure. The Presidential Frontier Faculty program is a university-wide integrated interdisciplinary hiring campaign that is overseen by central university leadership, and encompasses hiring a large cohort of convergence research faculty to work on health, energy, sustainability and security.
The University of Houston has identified five societal challenges, each of which is bound to issues of urban growth and development. The evolution of cities is central to questions of sustainability, infrastructure, energy transition, public health, climate change, and technology. Often these problems are examined through the focused lens of a single sub-discipline, but they fundamentally require broad, large-scale, systemic thinking. New models are needed to address these challenge. The potential hire will engage with new thinking of sustainable communities and infrastructure, urbanization and smart cities. Their focus is not solely on issues of engineering, policy, law or design, but rather an integrative way of looking at the complexity of the contemporary smart city.
Understanding the multi-disciplinary nature of this venture to include architecture, sustainable urban design and planning, sustainable urban policy, sustainable environmental engineering and technology, the University has designated this a Presidential Frontiers Faculty Hire. The position will come with a 75% appointment in the Hines College of Architecture and a 25% appointment in the Cullen College of Engineering.

The appointment will come with a traditional teaching (undergraduate and graduate), research and service load, but the overarching goal of this faculty hire is growing UH’s research enterprise and thus this will comprise a larger percentage of the appointment.
Leadership, Collaborative and Research skills will be paramount. Candidates must be able to work with faculty across the spectrum of disciplines within and beyond the College as well as across diverse mediums and technologies.
Candidates must demonstrate superior design, technical focus on sustainability, and strong representation skills with clarity in communication, and an openness to collaboration. Candidates with a strong commitment to innovative teaching practices, cultural awareness, critical practice, theoretical scholarship, all to empower urbanism. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
