Fall Conference Proceedings

Author(s): Emilia Layden, Joelle Worm, Marc Roehrle & Mo Zell

This paper chronicles three distinct voices: a curator,an architect, and a dance choreographer. Throughthe curation, commissioning, execution, and evolutionof the temporary installation Breaking Ground, situated on an urban University campus, the relationshipsbetween public space, place, and activitywere examined. The collaborators and their workprovided a platform to read and re-read the projectthrough 1) ephemerality (of both the temporaryinstallation and live dance performance), 2) a focuson experience over utility (the installation did notserve the same practical functions as a conventionalbuilding and the dance experience cannot existwithout the installation in the way a conventionaldance piece can), 3) a commitment to making artand experiences accessible to the public through itsengagement in civic space (a democratized approach)and 4) recreate the experience off-site at the ACSAconference in Marfa.
