Crossings Between the Proximate and Remote

The (Post-) Urban Compound

Fall Conference Proceedings

Author(s): Martin Hättasch

Between the ‘proximate’ and the ‘remote’, the architectural typeof the compound occupies a peculiar intersection: With its interiorfocus it exists as the space of the ‘other’ in the midst of a familiarterritory exuding the mystery and lure of the unknown. On the otherhand, it provides its occupants with a sense of familiarity and protectionfrom the forces of an unpredictable exterior environment. One example of the walled compound’s capacity to produce spaceswhere the dialectics of proximity and remoteness are entangledat close quarters, can be found in the town hosting this fall’s ACSAconference: When Donald Judd moved from New York City to thesmall rural Texas town of Marfa in the early 70’s, one of his first purchaseswas the block known as “La Mansana de Chinati”, or simply,“The Block”.
