Seeing Double: Stories from the Theater of Practice

Annual Meeting Proceedings

Author(s): George Barnett Johnston

This paper describes an approach to the history ofU.S. architectural practice that takes into accountunresolved tensions that still abide from formativeepisodes in the process of professionalization issuingfrom the first quarter of the twentieth century. Theongoing project proposes to “unpack” The Handbookof Architectural Practice, first published in 1920, as anindex of controversies and disputes then at the fore.It is suggested that attempts to ameliorate those conflictshave only provided provisional remedies and thatongoing shifts in models of architectural practice areas indicative of those unresolved tensions as they arereflections of revolutionizing technologies.
