Practical Theorization vs Architectural Practice in OMA /AMO

Teachers Proceedings

Author(s): Belen Butragueno, Javier FCO. Raposo & Mariasun Salgado

In the last years, there has been a disengagement between practicing architects and scholarship profiles. At present, there is a clear divergence between theory and practice in architecture. Theorization has been confined in Universities and Schools of Architecture, that have also abandoned the architectural practice or the practical research, in many cases due to a lack of resources. At the same time, studios working on architectural “production”, have not developed the necessary theoretical processes that could support their activity, as they are usually immersed in a frenetic activity allowing no remaining time for any kind of reflection on theoretical subjects. We can find many reasons for that disengagement, that has been largely accelerated in the last ten years by the global economic crisis, with serious consequences for our professional field and the academic sphere.
