Digital modeling and parametric softwaremake it fairly easy to design complex forms, which often need to be re-engineered formanufacturing, or at the very least translatedinto a suitable format such as cut sheetsor G-code. This research takes a differentapproach, investigating how two-dimensionaldrawing and patterning techniquescan directly translate to the manufacturing ofhighly variable volumetric surfaces. Expandedmetal surfaces, which use a pattern of offsetslits to produce a rigid and permeable sheetwith zero material waste, provides a precedentfor this work.
