The Great Lakes Basin is home to a large number citiesconsidered to be “shrinking”. This term is both negativeand inaccurate in describing what is actually aunique phenomenon of landuse fluctuation. Howeverthe negativity and lack of precision that accompanywords like ‘shrinking’ and ‘vacant’ have generateda tremendous rift in any attempt to understand ourcontemporary urban processes as anything but problematic, and force our hands toward nostalgia-drivenstrategies of problem solving. Instead, this fleeting andprecious moment of Lag should be used to undertakea much more inquisitive and opportunistic set of possibilities– before it is too late.
