Integration of Embedded Systems into Building Assemblies

Annual Meeting Proceedings

Author(s): Andrzej Zarzycki

This paper discusses strategies to facilitate Internetof Things (IoT) implementations within buildings andbuilding assemblies. It looks into emerging concepts ofadaptable buildings from the perspective of the inneroperational logic and required functionalities such asplug-and-play (PnP) architecture to orchestrate largerintelligent systems for architectural applications. Thepaper discusses the use of the ESP8266 microcontroller(also known as NodeMCU) asone of the currentapproaches forIoT systems, particularly in the do-ityourself(DIY) movement. Presented case studies adoptthe ESP8266framework based on machine-to-machine(M2M) communication protocols as apotential solutionfor embedded building systems.
