Housing the Chronically Homeless: Opportunities and Challenges of a Community-Based Design Studio

Few evidence-based resources exist to guide architectsand clients during the design of permanentsupportive housing (PSH), especially related tocreating healthy, supportive environments for vulnerablepopulations. An undergraduate architecturedesign studio partnered with a Northern Indiana PSHproject team, architects of successful PSH, and existingPSH residents to propose an evidence-based,non-institutional, functional, healthy and safe PSHfacility. Successes and challenges of the project andpartnership are discussed.
