Bridging Sustainability to the Studio Setting

Annual Meeting Proceedings

Author(s): James K. Wright

Sustainable design can be defined as a regenerative process applied within a cultural and ecological context. One approach to integrate sustainability into the studio setting is addressed in this paper. We can use the inclusiveness of daylighting to bridge the gap between issues of energy/resources and aesthetics/quality of life. Thermal expression in design can help the student move from the pluralistic/technical to the individual/aesthetic. Evaluation of the approach focuses on the student work. Criteria that define lasting architecture can be applied. The student’s engagement with sustainable design can be a measure of the merits of the approach.
