Forecasts of the challenges facing the world in the next few decades provide a strong motivation for a research program focused upon an integrated study of the built environment. Schools of architecture can play an important role in finding solutions to problems that are of critical importance to society. Economic analysis, forecasts by futurists, and industry trends are discussed to derive an agenda for research in schools of architecture. Five themes are identified and justified: The design of cities to reduce environmental degradation. Evidence-based design of critical building types: healthcare facilities, schools, and housing. Technology for sustainability. Information technology. Regulatory and contractual structures.
