A geological sensibility has been gaining ground inarchitecture lately, from the authored rock pile tothe megalithic stack. Some architects are giving formto the precarious physics of heavy things;1 some areplaying up the material qualities of the excavated orthe rough;2 some are mobilizing a stratigraphic referenceto deep time.3 While these tendencies mightseem to add up to a common underlying motive, they represent a range of design practices with verydifferent aims.
