Timber Education Resource Library
Softwood Lumber Board and the ACSA Announce
a partnership to create a Timber Education Resource Library
Call for Proposals
Overview
Submission Deadline: November 23, 2022
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) is pleased to announce a partnership with the Softwood Lumber Board (SLB), to create a Timber Education Resource Library. This library seeks proposals for video content to be used in evidence-based course environments for learning about mass timber. Using wood as a building material can achieve multiple and increasingly urgent design, construction, and performance objectives. The selected videos will assist faculty and equip students with the knowledge and design skills to achieve green building goals in various project types. From seminars and design studios to building technology classes and structure lessons, the range of courses offered at schools of architecture demonstrates the importance of sustainable design education with renewable timber at its core.
Timber Video Focus Areas
Timber Performance
(Structure, Durability, Carbon Sequestration, Life Cycle Assessment, Material Properties, Life Safety, Structural Grid, Fire Resistance, Moisture Management, Acoustics, Vibration, etc.)
Timber Construction Systems
(Wood Products [CLT, NLT, DLT, Glulam], Prefabrication, Mass Customization, Digital Manufacturing, Hybrid Construction, Designing for Disassembly, Composites, etc.)
Sustainable Timber Industry
(Fair Sourcing, Harvest, Carbon Cycle, Biodiversity, Geography, Land Use, Forestry Management, Chain of Custody, Certification Systems and Social Aspects, etc.)
Funding
Video creators (authors) will receive stipends for their work of approximately $5,000 USD. The amounts will depend on the length and scope of the work commissioned. A budget for each module will be identified. In some cases, the budget may be used for third-party support (e.g., an instructional designer or video producer who can bring the educator’s work to an appropriately polished level).
Eligibility
Since the support of SLB is largely derived from companies whose markets are mainly in the United States, the Timber Education Prize is open to faculty and/or faculty teams from ACSA Full and Candidate Member Schools, as well as ACSA Affiliate Members Schools from the United States and Canada.
Submission
Proposal submissions will be accepted through an online interface. The final submission upload must contain the following:
- Video Proposal (three pages)—The video proposal should consist of a title, video description, an outline of the video, and a work plan for the video creation.
- Bio—If multiple authors are involved, include all (entire bio submission not to exceed two pages).
- Budget—An itemized estimate and narrative description of expected use of funds (one page).
All material should be submitted in PDF format, with no more than six 8.5” x 11” pages total.
