Assistant Professor of Teaching in Architectural Technology and Design


The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching anticipated to begin 1 July 2023. This position will contribute expertise and leadership to architectural technology, fabrication, communicating construction curricula and pedagogy, and potentially design-build related activities across SALA’s graduate and undergraduate programs. However, its principal teaching responsibilities will be in the Master of Architecture program. Teaching assignments may include required and elective courses in materials in design, construction, construction communication in design, design fabrication, and design build projects.

Faculty appointments of this type are centered on teaching, curriculum, and pedagogy without additional research and scholarship expectations.

Educational Leadership

Tenure track appointments in the Education Leadership Stream cultivate and reward outstanding teaching and leadership through contributions to curricula and pedagogical innovation. In this position, SALA seeks a faculty colleague knowledgeable in the above cited subject areas and committed to innovative approaches to teaching with strong connections to architectural design, practice, and building.

Of particular interest, SALA is committed to continuing and expanding its capacity to offer multiple types and scales of hands-on and applied design-build experiences appropriate to all students. The MArch program has offered advanced Design Build opportunities for many years that have included projects at many different scales with and within diverse British Columbia communities. We aspire to expand that focus to projects that engage a greater diversity of students and address school wide challenges such as climate change, embodied carbon, renewable energy, and responsible use of resources.

The successful candidate will pursue a productive teaching portfolio as well as contribute leadership to the development and coordination of curricula, pedagogies, and infrastructure that advance these ambitions. This includes cultivating relationships with community partners and sponsors.

Preference will be given to candidates with distinguished accomplishments in the profession, professional experience in architectural design, and built work. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to integrate their creative work and professional interests into their teaching and develop an innovative and integrated teaching and service portfolio. SALA is seeking an individual that advances these interests alongside the ability to inform design and architectural technology issues and challenges of relevance to the School and our region.

The Assistant Professor of Teaching also contributes to service within the School, the University and to the academic and professional community. Candidates will hold a terminal degree in Architecture or comparable combination of relevant education and experience. All applicants should have a commitment to the highest standards of teaching. Strong candidates will bring a track record of, or demonstrated potential for, innovative approaches to teaching, curriculum design and pedagogy, including those that advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion in the discipline, productively connect academic programs with related communities, and leverage lived experience. Preference will be given to those candidates able to demonstrate interest and ability to engage with, and contribute to, the design and interdisciplinary culture of SALA.
