Assistant Professor of Architecture

The University of Florida’s School of Architecture (UFSoA) in the College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP) invites applications for two faculty positions in architectural design and research at the Assistant Professor level to be based on its main campus in Gainesville, Florida.

UFSoA is searching for faculty with strong research interests and expertise who are prepared to thrive within a highly competitive R1 research university. Successful candidate(s) will maintain active research and scholarship, teach studio and seminar courses, and contribute to academic and professional service. We are especially interested in hiring candidates poised to expand upon SoA’s strengths in the following areas:

  • Computational Design and AI – UF has made significant investments in AI and hardware, such as the HiPerGator supercomputer, to support research and teaching. As a result of these strategic initiatives, faculty at the School of Architecture (SoA) have developed an AI graduate certificate and have started the SHARE Lab focused on using AI and Big Data in design practice.
  • Resilient Urbanism – Florida’s coastal environments face tremendous risk and UF and SoA play a crucial role in community-engaged research and teaching through the Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience (FIBER) and the Center for Hydro-Generated Urbanism (CHU). In addition, DCP has begun developing a master’s degree program in resilient urban design.
  • Design Pedagogy – The School of Architecture is recognized for its learning and teaching culture. We value faculty who cultivate teaching as research. The selected candidate will play an instrumental role shaping a PhD “Design Pedagogy” focus and mentoring students who contribute to teaching and curriculum development in the undergraduate and MArch programs.
  • Construction and Building Technologies – The School of Architecture has a legacy of expertise in building technologies with multiple solar decathlon awards, including ongoing research in Tyonek, Alaska. The DCP Fabrication Lab has extensive equipment available for digital production and research. Faculty have active research in Acoustics, Sustainability, Digital Fabrication, Material Assemblies, Lighting, Structural Systems, BIM, and Design-Build.

The University of Florida’s School of Architecture (UFSoA)

UFSoA, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025, is known for its rigorous and interdisciplinary design studio curriculum and culture, which includes numerous international opportunities and academic concentrations. The program has approximately 425 undergraduate and 200 Master’s and PhD students. There are three off-campus programs: CityLab-Orlando, which graduated the first class of Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) students in the US; CityLab-Jacksonville; and the Vicenza Institute of Architecture in Vicenza, Italy. International studies play an important role in the SoA curriculum with almost 75% of the student body participating in study abroad programs in Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The 32 full-time faculty of the School of Architecture produce research, creative works, and design scholarship through independent initiatives, centers, and institutes. The School of Architecture offers graduate concentrations and certificates in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Design, Public Interest Design (PID), Acoustics, Themed Environments Integration (TEI), Healthcare Design Integration (HDI), Building Performance, and Architectural Design Pedagogy.

SoA offers the following degree programs: Bachelor of Design in Architecture, Master of Architecture (NAAB Accredited), Master of Science in Architectural Studies, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture that includes interdisciplinary coursework in design, construction and planning. UFSoA is one of five active, interdisciplinary units in the College of Design, Construction and Planning that contributes to solving built environment challenges in Florida, across the US, and the world. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated faculty at a top ranked public university abundant with cutting-edge research, scholarship, and teaching. This rich environment provides ample opportunity for collaboration. SoA is committed to supporting faculty through mentorship, research and travel funding, assistance with grant writing and publication, and funding for graduate assistants to support teaching and research.

The College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP)

The College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP) is one of the few colleges in the nation that houses design, construction and planning under one college. With programs in architecture, construction management, interior design, landscape architecture and urban planning, historic preservation, and sustainability and the built environment, students are exposed to an interdisciplinary reflection of the world around them. UFSoA faculty collaborate in research and teaching with faculty in each of the college’s other units, and across the university, reflecting the college’s dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration. The Bruno E. and Maritz F. Ramos Collaboratory, opening in 2025, will further unite the disciplines under one roof. This new facility includes a research hub to house all DCP research centers, a large multipurpose hall and seminar rooms for lecture series and symposiums, creative collision common spaces, and a digital modeling and fabrication space.
