POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Architecture at the University of California Berkeley is conducting an international search for a full-time position in Architecture and
Urbanism at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track.

The Department of Architecture is looking for outstanding candidates who demonstrate a commitment to advancing architecture and urbanism through
exceptional design and research work and teaching that can bring new dimensions to the Department\’s intellectual milieu. Candidates are expected to show
strong promise of significant creative work and potential for original contributions to the field.

The Department seeks candidates whose work engages critically, creatively, and imaginatively in architectural design in relation to urbanism, emphasizing
areas that could include contemporary cultures and theories; climate change and ecology; social, racial, and environmental justice; design technology, media,
and computational spatial methodologies; and housing and public space studies. Candidates should be committed to a critically engaged understanding of
design and must demonstrate a strong trajectory and emerging potential for creative work, design research and publications. Faculty responsibilities include
teaching introductory and advanced design studios in the undergraduate and graduate programs on architecture and urbanism, as well as seminar and lecture
courses. Additional duties include providing service to the department, college, university, and the greater community.

Founded in 1959, the College of Environmental Design (CED) has been at the forefront of environmental design education. As the first institution to combine
architecture, planning, and landscape architecture into a single college, CED continues to offer a vigorous multidisciplinary environment where collaboration
and experimentation can flourish. Within it, the Department of Architecture’s evolution has been nourished by social, cultural, and environmental values, and
our geographical setting; on the Pacific Rim at the border with Latin America and facing Asia, California is an urban laboratory that has long been recognized as
an area for urban research and experimentation.

These values are also reflected in our innovative teaching, scholarly research, critical design inquiry, and synthetic practice. Our award-winning faculty bring
both broad and deep intellectual diversity to our educational community. The Architecture Department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. The
Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in architecture offers both a liberal arts-oriented and pre-professional education. The Master of Architecture is a
professional degree requiring two, or three years, depending on the student’s incoming background. The Master of Advanced Architectural Design is a oneyear,
post-professional degree intended for those with a professional degree who wish to continue exploring design issues in an experimental studio setting.
The Master of Science and a Ph.D. in architecture are research-based degrees in one of the following areas of study: History, Theory, and Society and Building
Science, Technology, and Sustainability.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor degree (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications
A professional degree in architecture and/or urban design
M.Arch or B.Arch with an additional graduate degree (such as an MA, MS, or Ph.D.) (or equivalent international degree) by the start date of the position
strongly preferred.
