Assistant or Associate Professor in Landscape Architecture
The School of Landscape Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor for a tenure-track position to begin August 1, 2023. The position is for a full-time 9-month appointment.
We are seeking an energetic, collaborative candidate with an emergent or established research agenda and a commitment to the development of innovative ways of teaching contemporary landscape architecture. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the development of new research trajectories and curricular advancement through the teaching of core and elective design studios, seminars, and workshops. An interest and ability in teaching design studio is critical. Areas of interest that are desired and valued in the school as it continues to grow and evolve include advanced digital technologies, ecology, landscape theory, and landscape construction. Funding is available to kick-start research in the candidate’s area of expertise or exploration.
Established in 2008, the School of Landscape Architecture is a graduate landscape architecture program that is committed to progressively exploring the medium of landscape through teaching, research, and design. Along with Schools of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Design, the school is housed in the College of Architecture and Design. The School of Landscape Architecture is also supported by the Herbert College of Agriculture and is deeply committed to interdisciplinary collaboration between design and science as indicated by its two-college partnership. Collaboration with faculty in the College of Architecture and Design, the Herbert College of Agriculture, and from other colleges and departments across the university is encouraged and supported.
Knoxville offers easy access to scenic and recreational outdoor activities while providing contemporary urban amenities and research opportunities. The regional landscape includes iconic ridge and valley systems and water resources, as well as the landscape legacy of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the research production of Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL), and the ecological complexity of the Great Smokies National Park and Knoxville’s 1000-acre Urban Wilderness. Other major cities in Tennessee and the region such as Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Atlanta also provide many unique opportunities for innovative pedagogy and research.
The College of Architecture and Design also boasts a 20,000 sq. ft. Fab Lab located in downtown Knoxville. This facility houses metal, plastic, and wood shops and is host to a wide range of cutting-edge technologies such as a water jet cutter, robotic arms, 3d printers, CNC routers, and more. Faculty are encouraged to engage these technologies in their pedagogy in order to extend the students’ design process through physical making and modelling.

The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.
Teaching responsibilities will typically include one design studio and one seminar each semester. An ability to collaborate with instructors teaching courses in parallel areas of the curriculum is desirable. Service assignments at the level of school, college, or university will be made strategically in order to allow for priority to be given to research and teaching.
Must hold a terminal degree in landscape architecture or an allied field at the time of appointment.

- Research, scholarship, creative activities, and/or engagement that exhibits an emergent or established research agenda with originality and significance
- Evidence of promise as a skilled instructor and the ability to teach landscape architecture studio
- A record of incorporating equity and inclusion into research, teaching, and/or professional practice
- Research and teaching foci in one or more of the following areas:
- Digital Technologies
- Landscape Theory
- Landscape Construction
Qualifications for Rank
All tenure-line faculty are expected to contribute to the missions of teaching, research/scholarship/creative activity/engaged scholarship, and public service. In addition to the required qualifications listed above, candidates seeking initial appointment to tenure-track associate professor rank must (1) have a proven record of teaching excellence, (2) have achieved and maintained a recognized record in disciplinary research, (3) have normally served as an assistant professor for at least five years, and (4) have demonstrated that they work well with colleagues and students in performing their university responsibilities at their previous institution.
Salary and benefits will be commensurate to the experience and accomplishments of the candidate.
