Assistant/Associate Professor of Architecture with Performance-Driven Design and Building Integration
The School of Architecture & Design at the University of Kansas invites applications for a tenure/tenure-track position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Architecture with an emphasis in Performance-Driven Design and Building Integration beginning in the fall of 2022. The Architecture Department faculty’s core purpose is to prepare new practitioners in the design of the built environment and for the path to architectural licensure. It seeks ways by which humanity can inhabit this planet in a sustainably healthy way. It does so primarily through its NAAB accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program and its soon to be accredited Interior Architecture (IA) program.
Architects are increasingly expected to incorporate performance-driven design knowledge and research into the integration of building systems and programs. This knowledge area is especially relevant in buildings that protect the health, safety and welfare of building occupants and the public. Methods of performance-driven design also demonstrate the measurable impact of processes of built environments that are sustainable, healthy, socio-culturally equitable, and economically viable. This position will be central in implementing coursework in this area of knowledge in the professional and graduate curricula, fostering funded research in performance-driven design theories and methods, and coordinating professional and academic programs offering certifications in performance-driven methods of building evaluation. The faculty is committed to excellence in applying our knowledge and experience in educating the next generation of architects. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to its core purpose as described above.
In addition to the M.Arch. and IA degrees, the Architecture Department also offers an MA in Architecture, a PhD, and multiple certificate programs. It has urban design studios in Kansas City, as well as summer, semester, and year-long foreign-study programs around the globe. In addition to Studio 804, the Health and Wellness Design Institute and the School\’s Center for Design Research, the Architecture Department has recognized areas of expertise in Design-Build, Sports and Entertainment, Interior Architecture, Public Interest Design, Historic Preservation, Sustainable Design, and Smart Cities.

Expected Differential Allocation of Effort:
Typical teaching expectation for Architecture faculty is: two 6-credit architectural design studios, and one 3-credit lecture or seminar per year. Meet department expectation in terms of student advising.
Conduct research, creative, and/or professional work that focusses on issues of performance-driven design and building integration. Disseminate this work through peer-reviewed publications and conferences. Seek external funding to support a focused research agenda.
Serve the department, university, state, and the profession (primarily on committees and boards).
Required Qualifications for both Assistant and Associate Professor Candidates:
Demonstrated record of research, creative, and/or professional work that demonstrates expertise in performance-driven design and building integration processes, especially as they relate to health, safety, and welfare in the built
Significant professional experience in architectural practice plus a post-professional graduate degree in architecture, OR a PhD in architecture with an emphasis in performance-driven design and building integration
A professional degree in architecture (NAAB accredited, or equivalent).
