2022 Habitat Design Competition: Climate Positive Concrete Housing

Prizes Awarded to Students for Innovative, Sustainable Designs

For Immediate Release:
Washington, D.C., August 26, 2022 – Habitat for Humanity International, Inc., the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s Build With Strength Coalition, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) are pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Habitat Design Competition: Climate Positive Concrete Housing. The competition is based on the Habitat for Humanity U.S. Construction standards for affordable, resilient, sustainable and accessible homes. Students were challenged to explore a variety of innovations and tools to improve climate conditions with concrete building materials in the design and construction of an ideal Habitat home. The competition drew over 500 participants and received nearly 200 submissions from 23 colleges and universities across North America.

Architects are in a unique place to envision innovative solutions to the housing crisis as well as to address the impacts of climate change through the design of the built environment. Competition entries were judged on their successful inclusion of low or negative embodied carbon strategies in materials and construction processes as well as creative design concepts that support affordable housing.
