Co-chairs: John Stuart, Florida International University & Mabel Wilson, Columbia University

Call for Session Topics

Submission Deadline: February 4, 2013

The ACSA invites proposals for paper session topics related to the conference theme as well as to the full range of subject areas within architecture, its related disciplines, and its allied professions. After reviewing the proposed session topics, the co-chairs plan to develop a call for papers. Among the topics to be considered at the Globalizing Architecture conference will be the increased prevalence of travel in design studios, the exploration new pedagogies in global architectural history/theory, expansion in the scope of how sustainable structures and new building technologies are measured, consideration of the impact of digital media technologies and practice, an appraisal of the rapid development of online education, the emergence of new areas of global research and trans-disciplinary practice, and the opening of new spheres of hybrid design practices.

Critical areas for consideration
        • How has teaching architecture in a global context shaped the curricula and pedagogies of architectural education?
        • What new frameworks of historical knowledge have emerged through the research of alternative narratives of modernism and modernity?
        • How has the professional paradigm of the global architect influenced the methods and discourses of building buildings?
        • In what ways do emerging networks of connectivity influence how architectural practice operates and how education is delivered?
        • If sustainability becomes an international standard, how do the technologies of construction adapt to local conditions while simultaneously emerging from global networks of production?
        • With interest in urbanization and the city emphasizing building on a large scale, how do we continue to engage in a dialogue about building architecture at the small scale?
        • In the rush to globalize should the local become a site of resistance?

Session topic proposals may be broad in reach or sharply focused. in either case, each proposal should clearly identify its subject and its particular approach to it: the premise, scope, and ambitions underlying the session should be clear to the reader.

Session Topic Submission Requirements
All authors submitting topics must be faculty, student or staff at an ACSA member school or must contact ACSA directly (202.785.2324) to receive website access for submission. Authors of session topic proposals submit a 500-word (maximum) description of the session, suitable for blind review, and a brief author biography that demonstrates the author’s expertise in the proposal’s area of focus.

Session Topic Selection Process

Each session topic proposal is blind peer reviewed by a minimum of 2 external reviewers. Co-chairs review the ratings and comments from the external reviewers, the proposals themselves, and the biography statement supplied by the proposal author. The selection process takes into consideration the merits of the session topic proposals—the subject, premise, and scope of the proposed session topics should be clearly stated—the expertise of the session topic authors, as well as the importance of organizing a diverse set of sessions for the Annual Meeting. The conference co-chairs will select from the proposed topics and develop additional topics to create a well-rounded call for papers. Decisions on proposals will be announced in March 2013.

The authors of the session topics selected in the first stage will serve as topic chairs for their respective paper sessions. Working in collaboration with the conference co-chairs, the session topic chairs are responsible for maintaining a blind-review process for all papers submitted during the entire review process; enlisting three blind reviewers for each of the papers submitted to their session topic; recommending final papers for presentation; and moderating their respective sessions during the Annual Meeting. It is ACSA’s policy that accepted topic chairs are required to complete advanced registration for the 102nd ACSA Annual Meeting.

Call for Papers

Submission Deadline: September 18, 2013

The Call for Papers will list the final session topics and will be announced in April 2013. All papers will undergo a full-paper blind peer-review process. Session topic chairs will take into consideration each paper’s relevance to the topic and the evaluation furnished by the three peer reviewers. Typically, each session will include three or four presentations, with time for discussion. All papers will be submitted through an online interface and must meet the general criteria identified in the Call for Papers and in the submission guidelines. Each author will be limited to one submission per session topic. All authors submitting papers must be faculty, students, or staff at ACSA member schools, or become supporting ACSA members at the time of paper submission. Authors whose papers have been accepted for presentation will be required to register for the conference in advance.
