The School of Architecture at The University of Arizona develops aspiring design professionals and scholars with a sensibility honed in the conditions of an extreme climate on a major international border. Located in one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the United States, the region’s cultural diversity and indigenous building traditions inform cutting-edge research into fabrication and material technologies; the result is an ethically, technically, and socially-responsible critical practice in the contemporary world. We offer accredited B.Arch and M.Arch degrees in addition to an MS.Arch program with multiple research specializations, proudly part of an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) holding the Seal of Excelencia. 

Since the 1980s, the School has been known for place-based, climate-informed design; craft and making; sustainable design and research; and advanced material fabrication. Design informed by technical response to the geography and climate is evident in the work of our distinguished alumni as well as our students and faculty. Emerging from a pedagogy of 1:1 scale modeling and empirical testing, much of our work is developed in a world-class MaterialsLAB, a hallmark of the School. In the last decade, we have designed and built a number of projects in support of our community, including a pedestrian bridge, bus shelter prototypes for two municipalities, and ten sustainable/affordable houses, all of which have won design awards. We are part of a multi-university consortium that produced projects around North America, including a gridshell shade pavilion in front of our College. We are now design-building six campus rowhouses funded by, and serving, our University. Our B.Arch is ranked 24th in nation by DesignIntelligence where we have placed in the top-25 for seven of the last nine years.

Our School takes seriously its Land-grant status in the community, serving a student body (27% Hispanic, 14% non-resident alien, 48% white) that is more diverse than Arizona. Design-Build, Assistant or Associate Professor. The School invites applications for a tenure-eligible position to develop expertise in educational design-build as a researcher, teacher, craftsperson, and practitioner, advancing the design-build pedagogy of the school, engaging ethnically-diverse students, cultivating community relationships, producing original research, and procuring funding to support design-build endeavors. 

Duties and Responsibilities: The position will have responsibilities for teaching (60%), research (10-30%), and service (10-30%), with specific duties that will fluctuate annually as determined by the Director based on the candidate’s qualifications and the needs of the School.  In addition, the candidate will:

  • Teach studios in the B.Arch and M.Arch programs, both design-build and traditional; work in collaboration with peers in the development and delivery of multi-section coordinated studios.
  • Assume the responsibility for, and management of, the Drachman Design-Build Coalition (DDBC) over a five-year period.
  • Innovate approaches to student engagement through outreach and research using best practices in sustainable design-build projects.
  • Contribute to the development of our design-build pedagogy and accredited professional degrees in general.  
  • Mentor students, including those from minoritized populations.
  • Advance peer-reviewed scholarship and funded-research in design-build practice and pedagogy, fabrication and material science, sustainable construction methods, service learning pedagogy, or community design.

Requirements:  The successful candidate must be qualified in design-build pedagogy or professional practice, have an accredited Master of Architecture with professional experience, and have a commitment to working with diverse populations. Architectural licensure must be obtained in Arizona within 12 months of hire. 

Desirable qualifications: A record of excellence in professional practice including design-build delivery; a passion for design and making, with substantial craft experience; funded research in building science or environmental sustainability; completed outreach projects; have worked for social justice or have experience working with underserved communities; peer-reviewed awards or scholarship on design-build topics; teaching experience; and knowledge of green-building techniques.
