Description

Chair of Architecture

The College of Architecture (CoA) at Texas Tech University (TTU) seeks energetic and experienced candidates for the position of Chair of Architecture at the Associate (with tenure) or Full Professor level to join the College faculty and participate in advancing innovative design, teaching, and creative research.  The College values teaching excellence and expects the Chair to be a collaborative and innovative leader responsible for advancing the College’s pedagogy and academic reputation.

The Chair will have oversight of and provide leadership for the B.S. in Architecture and M. Arch. programs. Duties include but are not limited to: curriculum and program development, coordinating studio levels, appointing faculty teaching assignments, and evaluating faculty teaching.  The Chair is expected to provide leadership of the College’s academic affairs, and to give creative support and direction to advance the College’s goals and objectives while promoting pedagogical excellence.  In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Chair will work closely with both the College’s faculty and the Dean.

Candidates should possess a record of distinction in academic leadership and a global perspective on architectural education. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop a strong research agenda through internal and external funding opportunities, and will serve the College, the University, and the professional and local communities.  Candidates who have a very strong record of scholarship supported by external funding, who have the proven capacity or a clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to TTU and the CoA are encouraged to apply.

The CoA has a new vision and goals which emphasize advanced design and design related research; as part of this endeavor the College is in the process of fully implementing a revised 4+2 curriculum.  Additionally, the CoA has hired many new and highly qualified faculty as part of this revitalization. The Chair of Architecture will contribute to and energetically lead these changes and help elevate the CoA’s programs and its profile.

The CoA’s main campus is located in Lubbock, Texas in the high plains of the West Texas and Llano Estacado regions. The Llano Estacado is one of the American West’s most unique landscapes with proximity to Marfa, Texas where the CoA is significantly engaged. The CoA Lubbock campus offers a B.S. in Architecture as well as M.Arch, M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The College also has a campus in El Paso, Texas; making the TTU CoA the only College of Architecture in North America with a permanent program on the US/Mexico border; border issues being a fundamental aspect of this program.  The CoA also has a program site in Houston, Texas for M.Arch candidates. Presently, our Houston program is under redevelopment with a shortly expected relaunch.  Finally, the CoA is both regionally and globally engaged, implementing a new semester abroad program in Seville, Spain and study abroad programs and studios located in multiple international cities.

These changes are in line with the University’s new strategic plan and in particular its attainment of Tier-One university status. The CoA has a diverse culture of students, with over 44% Hispanic students studying in all programs making the CoA the college who serves the largest percentage of Hispanic students at TTU, thus directly contributing to TTU being designated a Hispanic Serving Institution with an expected date of May 2019.
