At ArD, we understand the design disciplines as cultural practices that engage social, economic and political issues; and as critical tools of inquiry that integrate process with product, and methodology with representation in a multidisciplinary manner. Our inquiry through design comes with an acute awareness of our existence in a region with a multitude of languages and cultures, and of our location within Beirut with its exceptional physical fabric and cultural formats. The discourse in the department on the city is intense and pluralistic. It links the undergraduate and graduate programs of study in architecture, graphic design, and planning; and it facilitates close interaction between them and the professional community.
The department has two undergraduate programs, one in architecture and one in graphic design; and two graduate programs: urban planning and policy and urban design. The department is currently working to establish new graduate programs in architecture, graphic design, and in design studies.
Candidates are asked to submit: 1) A letter of application that includes a brief statement of teaching philosophy and research/creative activity, 2) A curriculum vitae, 3) Samples of publications, 4) Work and teaching portfolio (including samples of design work, as well as samples of students’ work, and course syllabi), and 5) The names and full contact information of at least three referees.
