The College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Urban Design, Landscape Urbanism, and Urbanism Theory and Practice to teach in the Master of Urban Design program (M.U.D.). The tenure home of the successful faculty candidate will be determined based on the faculty member’s teaching and research field of study in Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, or Landscape Architecture. We invite applicants who are committed to teaching graduate and upper-level urban design studios as well as lecture and seminar-based courses in history, theory, media and practice at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The new faculty will join an energetic team that continues to shape this young program, currently in its fourth year, in the face of challenging urban developments. The Master of Urban Design is an advanced, interdisciplinary program of study that focuses on contemporary challenges of urbanism at the local, regional and global scales. The program was founded with the understanding that urban environments should be engaged through an integrated design process that includes ecological, social, material, economic, and urban policy factors. The urban design degree reflects a deep commitment to a just and resilient urban environment within the context of an increasingly concentrated, connected and, diverse urban world.
The successful candidate is expected to engage the sociopolitical interface between design, planning, landscape, community, culture and economy. The expertise might include: urban resilience and geography; representation, mapping and modeling; social, philosophical and economic theories of the city; data and information systems; smart cities and urban culture; globalization, internationalization and infrastructure; participatory design, or related area of research. We seek candidates with an expertise and knowledge of issues that address both spatial and temporal thinking inherent in the above areas of expertise.
