Faculty Search: Rice Architecture, Rice University
Rice Architecture invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the school. Depending on qualifications, the position will be filled at either an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or an Associate Professor (tenured) level.
Candidates should be qualified to teach technology-based subjects in both lecture and seminar formats. Depending on the candidate, some form of design studio teaching/collaboration may also form a part of the teaching responsibilities.
We are particularly interested in candidates with a view onto technology that includes an interest in integrating building systems, materials, and delivery methods into the school’s well-established design and history-theory curricula. We anticipate the successful candidate being a leading voice in shaping a more resonant, more consequential approach to technologies so as to give our students and the discipline a more immediate and more vibrant grasp of architecture’s contemporary technological exigencies and potentials.
The Rice Architecture curriculum places a premium on architecture as a cultural undertaking. We understand this new position to be integral to that point of view and to be instrumental in enabling us to press forward with evolving approaches to how matter becomes buildings.
Please note: this is not a solicitation for mere digital/geometric expertise. It is a call
for leadership in architecture’s material, structural, environmental, and systems underpinnings, if perhaps with a digital basis. We are not looking for a single person to cover all of these subjects; we are looking for a candidate with expertise in one or more of them, a person whose teaching and research activities will enrich the promise of architecture’s physical characteristics and their relationship to architecture writ large.
