Function of the Position:

This is a senior management position on the Member & Component Resources team, with strategic responsibility to develop, implement and monitor initiatives designed to support AIA’s diversity and inclusiveness and emerging professionals programs.  The managing director will lead the Diversity & Inclusion and Emerging Professional Engagement team to insure the integration of this work within the department and throughout AIA. The incumbent will serve as subject matter expert on educating and engaging young professionals - especially those from diverse backgrounds and perspectives and promote diversity as fundamental to institutional excellence.

Job Duties:

Works with the VP, Member & Component Resources as a bridge between the academy and AIA members in the early stages of their careers by creating strategies for building relationships with high schools, community colleges and schools of architecture.

Oversees programs to position AIA as the leading source for information regarding career support and development for emerging professionals.  Works with staff and appropriate member groups to design and implement career advancement paths that offer increased resources and professional development opportunities for young professionals throughout AIA.

Collaborate with academic, non-profit organizations and architectural firms for increased diversity, inclusiveness and representation among faculty, students and AIA members.  Works with staff and appropriate member groups to provide AIA programming to promote diversity and inclusion and to offer professional development opportunities for underrepresented members.

Provides leadership for identifying and assessing unmet needs of special member groups and aligns efforts to address them while guiding on-going evaluation and updating of plans.

Establishes priorities within the team including, but not limited to, diversity and inclusion and emerging professional issues and programs working with the AIA Diversity Council, National Associates Committee, Young Architects Forum, and Council of Emerging Professionals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) and Training and Experience:

Licensed architect, with ten or more years of relevant experience in practice, with a minimum of five years engaged in teaching (full- or part-time) in a university or college architecture department is required.  Master's degree preferred.  

Leading candidates will have senior level experience with a clear understanding of the concerns of architectural students and emerging professionals and a commitment to increasing diversity and inclusiveness within AIA.  Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and an established network within the academic and/or architectural community are required.

Ability to build relationships with schools of architecture to support students as they transition to careers and AIA membership.  Ability to cultivate partnerships with non-profit organizations and schools that support AIA’s mission to insure more students graduate from high school and community college ready to succeed in a professional architecture program. 

Demonstrated skill in leadership and visioning; i.e. developing definitions for a desired state, assessing the current state, and developing strategies to eliminate the gap.  Skill in correctly identifying and defining objectives, and developing plans to accomplish programmatic and fiscal goals.  Considerable skill in strategic planning, collaborative problem solving, and volunteer management.

Supervisory Requirements:

Directs a team of 6 or more regular full-time and/or temporary employees.
