The Journal of Architectural Education solicits manuscripts in two categories, scholarship of design and design as scholarship, both of which are peer reviewed. Other manuscript types, reviews, oparch, and translations, transactions and interviews, are typically invited by the editors, and subject to review by the JAE editorial team.
1. Scholarship of Design - manuscripts that are primarily text based (7000 words maximum including endnotes) with illustrations serving to support the text.
2. Design as Scholarship - 8 (eight) page manuscripts that are primarily visual with text (1500 words maximum including endnotes and list of figures) serving to support the images.
3. Reviews - Reviews of single books, events or exhibitions (900 words maximum), reviews of multiple books, events or exhibitions (1500 words maximum), and reviews of buildings or projects (2500 words maximum).
4. OpArch - Opinion essays (800 words maximum).
5. Translations,Transactions, and Interviews - Original translations of articles, accounts of events and conferences, and interviews with scholars and practitioners; length and graphic content will vary considerably with the topic. Please consult with the Executive Editor before submitting manuscripts of this type.
Submissions that do not follow all guidelines will not be forwarded for review.

MANUSCRIPT CONTENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS - Author qualifications: The first author on the manuscript must be a faculty member teaching at the college or university level, or a PhD student studying for a degree in architecture. Students in undergraduate or Masters Degree programs may submit articles if they are listed as a second co-author only. Submissions from professional architects may be considered at the invitation of the executive editor.
- Unsolicited reviews are not accepted.
- Content: the manuscript must be written in standard English and include:
- a. Original scholarship significant to the field, conducted by the authors
- b. A clear and well organized argument
- c. A review of relevant literature on the topic
- d. The submission must meet the required word and image counts:
- i. For scholarly manuscripts: 7,000 words, 12 images
- ii. For design manuscripts: 1500 words, 20 images
- Publication history: Previously published articles are not accepted. Simultaneous submissions are not accepted. Manuscripts published in full in conference proceedings are considered previous publications.
- Copyright permissions: authors must obtain copyright permissions prior to submitting their manuscript.
- Ethical considerations:
- a. Authors must reveal any conflicts of interest as part of their manuscript submission.
- b. Authors must cite all information from others, as appropriate.
- c. Authors must include the names of all co-authors.

- i. Format: “.pdf” file
- ii. Must be signed and dated by the author
- e. Figures (12 for scholarly articles, 20 for design articles)
- i. Format: “.tif” compressed using the LZW method, or “.eps” files, ONLY; “.eps” files are recommended for computer generated artwork
- ii. Photography (color or black and white): 300 dpi, measuring 10” on the long axis
- iii. Linework (drawings and graphs, combinations of photography and linework, color or black and white): 600 dpi, measuring 10” on the long axis
- iv. Do not upload files containing thumbnail previews
- v. Embed every font in “.eps” files
