Architecture Schools in “Hard Times”

ACSA President Judith Kinnard responds to a recent report citing 14% unemployment among graduates with bachelor’s degree in architecture.

A recent study connecting unemployment and earnings to college majors is clearly a source of concern for architectural educators and the profession. It captured an unusual and difficult moment for the AEC industry caused by the ongoing recession. Yet a broader perspective on the historic cycles of the construction industry reveals that the long-term prospects for design professionals are very strong.

As the U.S. economy recovers, pent up demand will create the need for design leadership in the construction of new buildings for our civic and cultural institutions, for commerce, and for homes. Global demand for innovative design remains strong. Graduates of our architecture programs have the technical knowledge, the digital skills, and the talent that firms in architecture and affiliated professions need as they ramp up to respond to new opportunities and demand.

The conference theme focuses on CHANGE in relation to seven themes, Civic Engagement, Academia, Practice, Technology, Cities, Globalization, Sustainability and one flexible open category. Submit to JAE 66:1 and 66:2

Submission Deadline: February 1, 2012

The 66:1 issue will be a general issue inviting authors to submit manuscripts that explore architecture and architectural education from a variety of perspectives.

For the 66:2 issue, in an effort to cultivate the broad interests of its readers, the editorial board will offer architecture faculty and Ph.D. students the opportunity to propose a theme.

Final ARCHIVE Competition Deadline Extended: Submit a Video!

Submission Deadline: January 30, 2012

Submit your work to ARCHIVE100.org, a curated exhibit showcasing the meaningful work being done in architecture schools. The final competition asks students to create a three minute video showcasing their life in architecture school. The winners will receive $100 and be profiled in the final ARCHIVE exhibition.
