Using the Guide

Is the Guide Free?
There is no cost to search the Guide and download information about architecture programs. Users must register their name and email address, at a minimum to use the site.

What Schools Are in the Guide?
The ACSA Guide to Architecture Schools presents the full-member schools of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Full member schools are accredited and in-candidacy schools in the United States and Canada.

Are These All the Architecture Schools?
All of the accredited architecture education programs are listed in the Guide. As described below, only programs accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board and the Canadian Architectural Certification Board may grant degrees that are normally a prerequisite for pursuing licensure in the United States and Canada.

Why Do I Get 0 Results?
Using too many search criteria is the easiest way to get 0 results. Either reduce the number of criteria in the lefthand "Filter Results" interface, or enter a more general keyword in the Search box.

Where Does This Information Come From?
Information in the Guide are provided directly by the schools themselves. Although ACSA makes efforts to ensure the data is accurate and complete, schools may edit their own listings in the Guide at any time. Unless otherwise specified, data on tuition, financial aid, students, and faculty are for the 2007-08 academic year.

How Often Is This Information Updated?
The information was updated for the 2007-08 academic year. However, schools may update their information throughout the year.

Architects and Architecture Schools

What Career Options Do I Have With an Architecture Degree?
Lots. This requires a long answer, and archcareers.org is set up to help answer that better. In short, professional architecture degrees prepare to practice in the architecture profession. But architecture education also prepares you for a variety of career opportunities in design, construction, the arts, and other areas.

What Architecture Degree Should I Get?
Depends on where you are in your education. Architecture degrees come in at least three major categories:

  • Professional: accredited by the NAAB, the B.Arch, M.Arch, and D.Arch degrees are designed to provide you the foundation for becoming an architect, but they prepare you to do a lot of other things, too. A professional architecture degree is normally required to begin the process of becoming a professionally licensed architect.
  • Preprofessional: normally four-year undergraduate degrees in architecture; but some two-year degrees put you on a direct path to completing a professional degree.
  • Post- and nonprofessional: These are usually master's and doctorate degrees. A postprofessional degree allows you to continue your development as an architect after earning a professional degree; a professional architecture degree is normally required for these degrees.

What Are the Best Architecture Schools?
The Guide does not rank schools. Instead it is designed to allow you to find the architecture school that matches your needs and interests. Every one of our schools have strengths and characteristics that make them unique.

What Do I Need to Get Into Architecture School?
Because you can apply for admission into both undergraduate and graduate programs as a high school student, undergraduate student, graduate student, returning student, etc., admission requirements vary. A portfolio of design work may be required; test scores are often required; as well as the other common requirements of applications like transcripts, recommendation letters, etc. Schools in the Guide have the opportunity to provide minimum requirements for admission to each of their degrees.

How Do I Contact the Schools?
Look at each school's page in the guide to find out its website, mailing addresses (including admissions office), and email address.

What Is Accreditation and Why Is It Important?
Accreditation in architectural education certifies that each program meets minimum standards of quality in preparation of graduates for a professional career in architecture. Professional architecture degrees are accredited in the United States by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and in Canada by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board. Since most registration boards in the United States and Canada require any applicant for licensure to have graduated from an accredited program in their country, obtaining such a degree is an essential aspect of preparing for the professional practice of architecture.

Are There Any Online Architecture Programs?
Currently no accredited programs are delivered entirely online. A few programs have begun offering courses online. Keyword searching will help you find those.

Are There Any High School Architecture Programs?
There are a few high schools devoted to artchitecture and design, such as CHAD in Philadelphia and DASH in Miami.

Are There Any Summer Architecture Programs?
Several schools in the Guide offer summer programs. Keyword searching might help find them. See also this page on The American Institute of Architects website.

Do Any Schools Have Study-Abroad Programs?
Many, if not most, architecture schools have a study abroad opportunity for students. Keyword searching or browsing through the schools that interest you is the best way to find these.

Who Publishes the Guide?
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture publishes the Guide as a membership service. ACSA is the membership organization for architectural education programs in the U.S. and Canada.
